Sagres - Portugal
Fortaleza de Sagres
The massive ramparts of the fortress lead to the mighty Sagres headland. Here you will find a stone "Rosa dos Ventos", a wind rose used for determining the direction of the wind. It was excavated in the 18th Century and possibly built for Prince Henry.
An exhibition hall with displays about the Portuguese explorations and a restaurant are located at the site.
Look out for the death-defying anglers who perch atop the staggeringly steep cliffs with huge rods, hoping to land bream or sea bass.
Cape St Vincent
The mythical atmosphere of this dramatic promontory must not be missed. At the end of the cape are a powerful lighthouse and a former convent. Some scholars place Henry's house in a small castle to the right of the lighthouse grounds.
The best time to go there is at sunset, when you can almost hear the hissing as the sun settles into the sea.
Beaches
There are four good beaches within a short drive from Sagres: Praia da Mareta just below the town, Praia do Martinhal to the east, Praia do Tonel on the other side of the Ponta da Sagres and the isolated Praia do Beliche on the way to Cape St Vincent.
